Bistable Composite Boom
Custom OrderExtremely lightweight deployable boom with a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Uses bistable composite technology (BhorForce® UC160C and LY556 epoxy) to hold two stable configurations without external force.
This project documents the hands-on development of a bistable composite boom a structure capable of holding two stable configurations (coiled and extended) without mechanisms. Achieving bistability involved numerous iterations, with careful adjustment of layup strategy and curing consistency.
Ideal for CubeSat antennas, solar sail deployment, and instrument booms where volume constraints are critical.
